1) what faults does Lomov find in squeezer? What are the faults that Natalya finds in Guess? (3+3=6)

Ans : Lomov and Natalya become engaged in a quarrel for a second time over the superiority of their respective Hunting dogs.  Lomov Finds that squeezer, Chubukov's dog, is over shot . He is good at following but cannot hold a prey as his lower jaw is shorter. Dogs like squeezer are easily available in every bush around and twenty five roubles would have been a handsome price for him. He also curses squeezer.

Natalya is furious to hear this. She indicates that unlike squeezer, guess does not have any Pedigree at all. He is old and as ugly as a worn- out - cab horse. it's time that guess should be shot. Guess is already half dead, so there is no need to hang him.

2) make a brief sketch of social life as you find in the play the proposal. (6)

Ans : We find the typical feudal society in chekhov's one- act play 'the proposal' . This society does not pay any heed to personal desires and emotions. Like an automated machine it wants to carry forward it's worn out conventions. It is easily acceptable in such a society that someone would marry to maintain social status and economic stability. The father considers his daughter a liability. This attitude is still prevalent and dominant in our society. So we can connect Chekhov's Russia with our society on the ground of our attitude towards the girl children. The society portrayed in the play is primarily agrarian. It finds its entertainment in hunting or drinking wine. Chekhov always fought against such vulgarity of living in the Russian Society of his time.

3) comment on the aptness of the title the proposal. (6)

Ans : In Anton Chekhov's one - act play the proposal all of the characters are some way or the other influenced by the marriage proposal. Lomov is desperate for a wife. Natalya has not found her man . Chubukov wants his daughter to get married soon. Lomov's intention makes chubukov Jubilant. However before unfolding his proposal to Natalya, Lomov becomes entangled into long arguments with her, first over a disputed plot of land and then over their Hunting dogs. So  Natalya does not get any proposal from Lomov. However, the proposal is successfully completed by the marriage at the end because of chubukov Presence of Mind. The title the proposal appears to be more meaningful for that.

4) Discuss the reasons why the marriage proposal is important to all the characters. (6)

Ans : In Anton Chekhov's  one act play' the proposal' Lomov enters chubukov's  house with a marriage proposal for Chubukov's daughter Natalya. This proposal is crucial for all the characters. Lenovo has reached the  critical age of 35. He is desperate for a wife. Natalya has not also been able to find her man. Chubukov thinks his daughter a liability and wants her to get married soon. So, chubukov becomes Jubilant when he he hears Lomov's proposal. He hopes Natalya , a love sick cat, will readily accept it. When Natalya Learns about Lomov's proposal after his exit she madly demands her  father to get him back. Thus all the characters are greatly influenced by the marriage proposal.
